About the election
When does the election take place?
The direct mayoral election is on Sunday, 13 September 2026 – at the same time as the Lower Saxony local elections. The polling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
What happens if no one achieves a majority?
If no candidate receives more than half of the votes in the first round, there will be a runoff between the two top-placed candidates on 27 September 2026.
Who is eligible to vote?
In the local elections in Lower Saxony, all Germans as well as EU citizens aged 16 and over with their main residence in Salzgitter are eligible to vote.
How can I vote by postal vote?
You apply for the postal vote documents at the City of Salzgitter – online, in writing or in person. You will find deadlines and forms on the official election page of the City of Salzgitter.
What is elected besides the Mayor?
In the local elections, the city council and the local councils are also elected. The direct mayoral election decides who heads the city administration.

Who is Frank Klingebiel?
Frank Klingebiel (born 1964 in Salzgitter) has been Mayor of the City of Salzgitter since 1 November 2006 and is considered the longest-serving Mayor in Lower Saxony. He is a qualified financial economist (Diplom-Finanzwirt), married and father of two children.
What are his priorities?
Documented priorities are the industrial transformation (SALCOS, hydrogen), securing the industrial sites, capable city finances, education and family as well as solidarity in the districts. More on this under "Priorities" and in the track record.
What offices does he hold outside Salzgitter?
Frank Klingebiel is Vice President of the Lower Saxony Association of Cities and has been a member of the supervisory board of NORD/LB since 2012.

What does the industrial transformation mean for Salzgitter?
With the SALCOS programme, Salzgitter AG is switching to low-CO₂ steel production (around 2.7 Mrd. €, start 2027). Together with the hydrogen campus in Lebenstedt, Salzgitter sees itself as the "transformation capital" of industrial change.
What is the state of the city finances?
As Vice President of the Lower Saxony Association of Cities, Frank Klingebiel advocates for fair funding of municipalities and called for a reorganisation of municipal financial relations in January 2025.
